MTN Ghana to Gradually Phase Out 2G and 3G Networks

By Isaac Okyere

MTN Ghana has announced plans to gradually phase out its 2G and 3G networks, prioritizing a smooth transition for customers to 4G.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, emphasized the need to ensure affordable 4G devices are available to prevent customers from being left behind.

Speaking at a press briefing during the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Stephen Blewett acknowledged that a significant number of subscribers still depend on the older networks

According to him,  many customers still rely on older networks, with some preferring 3G for data management or using older devices that don’t support 4G.

“A lot of our customers are still operating on 3G. Even though 4G is widely available, some choose to stay on 3G because they feel data usage is better managed on 3G. Others, however, use older devices that don’t support 4G,” he explained.

MTN Ghana is committed to optimizing spectrum by eventually shutting down 2G and 3G, but the company is taking a cautious approach to ensure customers are not left behind.

“If we push to shut down 2G and 3G without ensuring customers have affordable 4G devices, we risk leaving people behind,” Mr. Blewett cautioned.

The transition to 4G is expected to bring several benefits, including faster data speeds, improved network efficiency, and enhanced mobile broadband experiences.

By prioritizing customer needs and ensuring a smooth transition, MTN Ghana aims to provide its customers with the best possible mobile experience.

MTN Ghana’s gradual phase-out of 2G and 3G networks reflects the company’s commitment to providing innovative and reliable mobile services.

By taking a cautious and customer-centric approach, MTN Ghana is working to ensure a successful transition to 4G, while minimizing disruptions to its customers.
