Kumasi Spare Parts Clamour for Flat Rate As Port Charges Soar

Spare Parts Dealers at Suame Industrial Area in the Ashanti Region have passionately sought for the introduction of the much-anticipated flat rate policy in the 2025 Mid-Year Budget.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Monday, Chairman for the association, Godfred Adu Kofi, said he was utterly shocked by the increase in port charges despite the appreciation of Ghana Cedis against the US Dollar.

He said the newly-introduced charges – most of which are irrefutably nuisance – – have increased the financial burden on their businesses.

According to him, their engagements with the Ministry of Trade and Industry have not yielded the desired results.

Sharing their personal experiences with regard to the increased charges, some of the spare parts dealers said they now pay 85,000 Ghana Cedis as duty for a 40-footer container.

According to the Deputy Secretary, Godfred Baffoe Bonnie, President John Dramani Mahama is yet to redeem the promises he made to the association ahead of the 2024 General Elections.
