Heads of Basic Schools Bewail Non-payment of Responsibility Allowances To Headmasters

The newly-elected Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools in the Suame Municipal Education Directorate, Kenneth Appiah Darko, has made a fervent appeal to government over the non-payment of responsibility allowances to headteachers, as well as the understatement of capitation grant to some basic schools.
Expressing his displeasure in an interview after an induction ceremony held for the new executive members, Mr. Darko – who doubles as headmaster for Anomangye M/A Basic School – observed that the concentration on senior high education is badly affecting the quality of education at the basic level.
Amongst other challenges, he noted that infrastructural deficit and congestion have made most of the basic school classrooms not conducive for learning.
He has, however, expressed optimism the recent promise by the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, to reinvigorate basic education, and the reintroduction of the Parents and Teachers’ Association are greatly appreciated.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Chairman for the group, Festus Addai, has expressed confidence in the new leadership to deliver on their mandate.
According to him, despite enormous support by the Suame Education Directorate, basic education is still beleaguered by the insufficiency of teaching and learning materials, especially with the introduction of the new curriculum. He has, therefore, impressed upon government to honour its promises to basic education.
