May Day Celebration: Ashanti Region Workers Demand Labor Reforms

Workers in the Ashanti Region marked May Day 2025 with a strong call for labor reforms, converging at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi to demand better pay and working conditions.

The event, themed “Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: The Role of Stakeholders,” brought together labor unions, government officials, employers, and civil society organizations.

The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Augustine Adongo, emphasized the need for a comprehensive reset in how workers are treated, citing low wages, unsafe workplaces, and uncertain job prospects.

He urged the government to review salary structures and called on employers to honor agreements with labor unions.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Boadi, celebrated workers as the “heroes of our nation’s progress” and assured them that the government is committed to improving wages, enforcing labor laws, and creating a conducive environment for businesses and employees.

The parade featured colorful displays by different worker groups, with placards demanding respect for workers’ rights, living wages, and safety at workplaces. Special recognition was given to unions and individuals who promoted labor rights and standards.

As the celebration ended, workers renewed their call for action, hoping that their collective voices would lead to meaningful change in their pay and working conditions.
