Dormaa Akwamu: Methodist Primary/KG pupils study under trees after fire raze school building

The pupils of Dormaa Akwamu Methodist Primary and Kindergarten in the Dormaa East District of the Bono Region are now forced to conduct their studies under trees.
This follows a catastrophic fire that razed down the entire school structure.
The Headteacher, Mr. Datus Kwadwo Manu accounted that the fire outbreak occurred on December 27, 2024, prompting ongoing efforts to address the destruction, with the cause of the fire still under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service.
He added that notifications have been dispatched to the local chiefs, the Dormaa East District Director of Education, and other pertinent stakeholders, all of whom have surveyed the situation firsthand. Nevertheless, no assistance has been forthcoming thus far, necessitating the students’ to study under trees.
Mr. Datus Kwadwo Manu seized the opportunity to implore the government, philanthropists, and other stakeholders to extend their support in assisting with the reconstruction of the affected school building, thereby providing accommodation for the students and facilitating effective teaching and learning.
He emphasized that the devastating fire that engulfed the school forces the students to study under trees, a circumstance that detracts from the learners’ concentration due to the continuous movement of reptiles and other animals across the compound.
He stated that all their textbooks, furniture, and other educational materials were consumed by the flames, which has severely impacted teaching and learning, underscoring the urgent need for immediate assistance for the students.
In a separate development, the students of Dormaa Akwamu Methodist Junior High School continue to study within a wooden edifice due to the unfinished state of the JHS block initiated by the previous NPP administration.
This project, funded by the Government of Ghana in partnership with the Arab Bank, remains 70 percent complete.
Honorable Samuel Kwadwo Sabi, the Assembly Member for the Dormaa Akwamu electoral area, disclosed that the immediate past District Chief Executive for Dormaa East intended to inaugurate the building for use.
However, the contractor opposed this decision, asserting that the government has not yet settled all outstanding payments. As a result, he refuses to grant access to the facilities until full compensation for the completed work is received.
He expressed his intention to collaborate with Nananom and the current NDC administration to engage with the contractor, ensuring all debts are resolved so that the permit can be granted for student use, thereby promoting effective teaching and learning.
He emphasized their relentless efforts to also construct a wooden structure to accommodate the primary and kindergarten pupils, whose building was destroyed by fire on December 27, 2024.
