By Isaac Okyere

The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has donated ten water tanks to communities in the Central Region affected by galamsey activities on the Ayensu River.
The tanks were presented by the Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Aduamoah Okyere Panyin, to the District Chief Executives (DCEs) of five districts: Gomoa East, Gomoa Central, Awutu Senya West, Agona West, and Gomoa West.
These areas have been severely impacted by galamsey, resulting in water scarcity and pollution. The donated tanks aim to alleviate the water crisis and provide relief to vulnerable communities. Hon. Aduamoah emphasized that the tanks should be strategically placed to benefit those in need.
The Regional Minister assured that the government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama’s predecessor, is committed to stopping galamsey activities on the Ayensu River and other water bodies.
He hinted at military intervention to enforce this commitment, with the goal of restoring the rivers to a safe and usable state.
The DCE for Gomoa East, Hon. Margaret Naana Ackom, expressed gratitude for the Vice President’s donation, urging that more tanks be provided to adequately address the situation.
Similarly, the DCE for Ewutu Senya West, Hon. Nyamekye Kalala, thanked the Regional Minister for the donation and advised that the tanks be properly maintained.
Galamsey has been linked to various health problems, including mercury poisoning, respiratory issues, and waterborne diseases. The government’s efforts to combat galamsey are crucial in mitigating these health risks and protecting the environment.
