The General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Stephen Wengam, has notified the church and general public to, henceforth, stop addressing him with the title of a “Dr.” because he possesses no such academic credentials.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 45th Anniversary Celebrations and Homecoming of the church at Upper Room Revival Assembly in Kumasi on Saturday, 16th August 2025, he admitted that despite accepting conferment of the title by a tertiary institution in 2012 for his impactful personality, he had ignorantly used it in both formal and an informal circles.
According to him, the situation has, unfortunately, created the impression that he holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification from an accredited university.
He observed with concern that the flamboyant use of the title: “Dr” by random persons has heightened public scrutiny of its bearers, making it unattractive for him any longer.
He intimated that after heeding to his intuitions in 2023, he made a public renunciation of the title and proceeded to notify the church leadership about it.
Accknowledging the implications that the unmerited use of an academic title could have on a bearer, Rev. Stephen Wengam, has invariably directed for all pastors of the church to discontinue the use of any titles they have not acquired by dint of hard academic work.
