CDD-Ghana Warns Free SHS Funding is Hurting Basic Education

The Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD-Ghana) has raised concerns that excessive government spending on the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy is negatively impacting basic education in Ghana.
According to recent surveys, the disproportionate allocation of funds to the SHS policy is affecting the basic education system.
Dr. Kojo Asante, Director of Policy Engagement and Partnership at CDD-Ghana, emphasized the need for reforms to reduce spending on the Free SHS policy.
He stressed that basic education is crucial for the country’s future and that neglecting it will have long-term consequences.
Dr. Asante suggested that the government prioritize investing in the basic education system, particularly in infrastructure, to ensure a brighter future for Ghana’s education sector.
He warned that the next generation will bear the cost of neglecting basic education if reforms are not implemented.
