The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a major decongestion exercise to begin on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, aimed at clearing unauthorized structures and activities obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement in the city.
The exercise, being carried out in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) and various security agencies, will target areas including the Central Business District (CBD), Okaishie, Kaneshie Market Area, and Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
The decongestion exercise aims to enhance public safety, urban mobility, and the city’s free flow of vehicles and pedestrians.
The AMA has emphasized that encroachments on pavements, footbridges, road shoulders, and other public right-of-ways are in violation of the AMA Hawkers Bye-Laws (2017) and punishable by law.
The exercise will be carried out in three phases over three consecutive days, targeting specific areas in Accra. The areas to be decongested on each day are:
The first day, Tuesday, May 20, 2025 Triangles around the AMA Head Office, Kinbu Road to Railways (Brewery), ECG Junction to Railways (King Tackie Statue), King Tackie Statue to Zongo Lane, and Opera Square Stretch to Coral Paint (Adabraka).
The second day Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Wato Junction to King Tackie Tawiah School (Adabraka), Cow Lane to King Tackie Tawiah Statue (Rawlings Park), and UTC Road to Children’s Hospital.
The AMA has urged hawkers, traders, and occupants of unauthorized structures to vacate the affected areas by the close of day on Monday, May 19, 2025, to avoid any inconvenience.
The exercise is expected to improve the overall traffic flow and pedestrian movement in the city, making Accra a more livable and accessible place for its residents.
