Galamsey Protest: GRPS Holds Prayer Gathering Ahead Protest

The Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS) held a prayer gathering on Sunday, April 27, 2025, in preparation for a planned protest against galamsey activities in the country.
The group’s leading convenor, Okatakyie Afrifa, announced that they will petition President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency over galamsey sites to protect the nation’s water bodies.
The GRPS plans to march to the Jubilee House to present their petition to the President, seeking his immediate attention to the galamsey menace.
According to Okatakyie Afrifa, the group believes that seeking God’s intervention is crucial before embarking on the protest.
Galamsey activities have been a significant concern for many Ghanaians, with the threat to water bodies being a major issue. Rivers such as Ankobra, Pra, Oti, Densu, Birem, Offin, and Tanoh are among those affected by the activities of illegal miners.
The GRPS’s planned protest and petition to the President highlight the need for immediate action to address the galamsey menace.
By seeking a state of emergency declaration, the group hopes to bring attention to the issue and prompt the government to take decisive action to protect the nation’s water bodies and lands.
